The International Seabed Authority has recently launched a Stakeholder Survey Questionnaire aimed at soliciting relevant information for the development of a regulatory framework for the exploitation of minerals in the Area. The aim of the survey is to begin a process of stakeholder engagement and consultation following a recommendation by the ISA Council that more in-depth studies should be done on the development of an exploitation code for marine minerals in the Area, and that stakeholder

In the framework of MIDAS workpackage 6 an initial meeting was organised at the Senckenberg Research institute (DZMB) in Wilhelmshaven from 11-13 March 2014 to discuss potential responses (i.e. resistance and recovery) of deep-sea ecosystems to mining activities. Participants included both scientists and industrial partners across 13 different institutes and 10 EU countries.
MIDAS scientists have returned from a successful cruise in the Black Sea, and are now busy processing huge volumes of seismic data. The cruise aboard the German research vessel, RV Maria S. Merian, spent six weeks over the 2013/14 festive period examining gas hydrate accumulations in the ancient Danube delta. An extensive 2D and 3D seismic survey was carried out, identifying a number of inactive and partly buried channel systems and the presence of gas hydrates in the overlying sediments.
A dedicated session on the 'Environmental impact of Future Deep Sea Mining', convened by MIDAS WP1 leader Jens Greinert (GEOMAR) and colleagues, will take place during the Goldschmidt 2014 conference in Sacramento, 8-13 June 2014.
A multidisciplinary team of marine scientists from Ifremer, UPMC and MNHM have set sail aboard the French research vessel RV Pourquoi Pas? to explore deep-sea life at specific study areas along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
The SPC-EU Pacific Deep Sea Minerals Project, set up to help Pacific Island countries to improve the governance and management of their deep-sea mineral resources, has collaborated with GRID Arendal to produce a series of publications on deep-sea minerals and their exploitation.
