Scientists from the MIDAS partnership presented a series of talks on the project and its objectives during a dedicated symposium session at the International Marine Conservation Congress in Glasgow on 17 August 2014. Held over the course of 5 days, the IMCC conference brings together conservation professionals and students to develop new and powerful tools to further marine conservation science and policy.
A recent news piece on deep-se mining in the leading science journal Nature features the work of MIDAS researchers. Focusing on the environmental concerns surrounding the rapidly-developing deep-sea resource extraction industry, the article features quotes from MIDAS Coordinator Phil Weaver and Ifremer's Jozee Sarrazin, who has recently returned from a MIDAS expedition to the mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Seven new applications for approval of plans of work for exploration in the International Seabed Area have been approved by the Council of the International Seabed Authority. The licence areas include three licences for nodule exploration, two for polymetallic sulphides and a further two for ferromanganese crust exploration:
From 13-31 July, the RV Pourquoi pas? will explore the depths of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Azores. The Momarsat 2014 cruise, led by Ifremer and IPGP, will carry out maintenance on the MoMar deep-sea observatory and investigate hydrothermal ecosystems in the Lucky Strike region using the ROV Victor.
MIDAS Coordinator Phil Weaver and Hannah Lily from the SPC-DSM project teamed up to present a double bill on deep-sea mining as part of the Deep Ocean Stewardship Intiative's online webinar series. Broadcast live on Wednesday 18 June, Phil introduced the MIDAS project, its goals and challenges, and how it will engage with stakeholders and governance bodies.
On 13-16 May 2014, a regional training workshop on "Deep Sea Minerals: Financial Aspects" was held in Rarotonga. The workshop was jointly organised by the SOPAC Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) through the SPC-EU Pacific Deep Sea Minerals Project and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and hosted by the Cook Islands Government.

The Dutch research vessel RV Pelagia set sail from Ponta Delgada in the Azores on 10 May 2014 to embark on a 3-week expedition to explore the Lucky Strike region of the mId-Atlantic Ridge.
Two papers addressing various aspects of the governance and stewardship of marine exploitation activities, have recently been published; both papers have contirbutions from the MIDAS community.
The first edition of the MIDAS newsletter has been released. Published on a quarterly basis, the newsletter presents a round-u[p of the latest project news, including results from recent cruises, the plans for forthcoming cruises, updates on the progress of experiments, and a summary of policy developments and stakeholder interactions.
On 1 April 2014, MIDAS specialists meet in Faro to discuss the fine details of ecotoxicology experiments to be carried out during year 1 of the project.
