MIDAS image selected for calendar

An image from the MIDAS hydrodynamic modelling work carried out at SAMS has been selected to appear in a 2015 calendar. The image (below), titled "Enhanced mixing of neutral buoyant plume in dynamic environments of tidally induced internal waves bouncing between steep side walls of deep narrow rift valley" was submitted by Dimitry Aleynik to an annual calendar competition run by ARCHER - the UK National Supercomputing Service - and was selected to appear on the September 2015 page. Enhanced mixing of neutral buoyant plume in dynamic environments of tidally induced internal waves (IW) bouncing between steep side walls of a deep narrow rift valley. This image shows a 3D snapshot of rising plume dispersal from a Rainbow hydrothermal vent field at the Mid Atlantic Ridge (36°14’N), bathymetry is shown every 50 m. On ARCHER the MITgcm numerical simulation of the largest documented natural plume in the deep Atlantic provides a proxy to assess environmental impacts of expected human activity.
